Dewat summit background
Safe drinking water and sanitation are fundamental human rights, critical for health, livelihoods, and socio-economic stability. However, when water is scarce or polluted, it exacerbates food insecurity, economic hardship, and conflict. Addressing these challenges is central to SDG 6, as emphasized by the United Nations World Water Development Report 2024, which highlights water’s role in sustainable development, climate action, and peacebuilding.

  • Facilitate Early Warning for Zoonotic Threats: Leverage wastewater data to pre-empt pandemics, reducing transmission from animal to human populations.
  • Incorporate Wastewater Management into Health Systems: Develop evidence-based policies and resources to embed DEWATS and surveillance into standard public health practices.
  • Promote DEWATS as a Pandemic Preparedness Tool: Raise awareness, explore a Global DEWATS Fund and foster a marketplace for preventive medicine and knowledge exchange.
